What Do the Backrooms Mean?
A user's description of a terrifying place outside of reality in a 2019 4chan post served as the inspiration for The Backrooms:

"You'll wind up in the backrooms if you're careless and noclip out of reality in the wrong places. ... it's nothing but the madness of mono-yellow, the stench of old, wet carpet, the constant hum-buzz of fluorescent lights, and around 600 million square miles of randomly divided, vacant rooms to be imprisoned in.

Online, this notion of a sterile yet oppressive liminal environment resonated. Without the use of monsters, which also appeared later, it gave rise to a whole subgenre of horror that is eerie, nostalgic, and otherworldly.
